Description
"Heworth is a great course that's a little over an hour from the city centre of York and is therefore one of the most popular courses in the area for visiting golfers.
Of parkland variety with a number of subtle tests and surprises, Heworth is a well-maintained course offering a variety of challenges for players of all standards.

There are many natural hazards to look out for and numerous tricky approach shots to engineer - great stuff.
Visitors are welcome on most days but it is advisable to telephone the professional in advance just to be on the safe side. Societies who wish to play should apply in writing to the secretary.

HISTORY

On the 30th March 1911 thirteen gentlemen held a meeting in the New Rifle Range Club in Harcourt Street, Heworth, York to discuss the formation of a golf club. It was proposed that a golf club should be formed and be known as Heworth Golf Club.
A nine hole course was laid out in 1911 by the Strensall Golf Club Professional, Mr Cheal, on an area of land known as Heworth Moor situated on the East side of the City of York, approximately a mile from the city centre. It is the only golf club in the York area to remain on its original location.
Over the years the number of holes altered according to the land made available but due to land requisites by the local council it eventually became an eleven-hole layout. To play it as an eighteen-hole course it is necessary to play seven greens twice from different teeing areas.
The land is relatively flat with the fairways being bounded by trees and shrubs. There are no fairway bunkers but most of the greens are well protected with strategically placed bunkers.
The course is 6141 yards long with a standard scratch of 69 from the white tees. The layout gives the impression that it is an easy course to play but because of the small greens and narrow fairways it is a challenge for any class of golfer. It is not a strenuous course to play and with the clubhouse being at the side of the eighteenth green a break can be taken halfway round to take refreshment if required.
Catering and bar facilities are also available as is a well-stocked professional shop attached to the clubhouse."
