"A park in East Yorkshire has thought ‘big’ when it comes to habitat creation and created a 70 acre country park to enhance the holiday experience for its guests. This wonderful nature reserve borders Far Grange Park in East Yorkshire and has attracted a wide variety of fauna and flora to this corner of the county.
“Where our caravans are placed is quite developed, so it was difficult to put in a large area of green. So we thought that the country park would be a great way of doing this.” explains park Owner, Mike McCann.
To develop the site, which was previously farmland, the park management created a six-acre lake, put in over 60,000 trees and developed reed beds, a marsh area and a network of footpaths. There is also an excellent visitors center to show people what they can expect to see. This is open to both park visitors and local schools.
“It’s been very well received, it helps us retain customers and impresses people who come to visit,” says McCann who is himself amazed by the wildlife that has come back to the area. “All of sudden it’s become an oasis for wildlife,” he says.
The park has also recently purchased a golf course, which is being managed to promote wildlife. All the borders within the park are fringed by wide wildlife boundaries rich in nectar and berry bearing species and there is a lot of inter-planting between pitches. Thanks to this approach there are a good number of wildflowers, birds, butterflies, bees and other insects throughout the site. Hares and other grassland species have also been found and water voles are present in the ponds.
Although Far Grange has gone for the ‘think big’ approach, McCann believes there are opportunities for habitat creation in even the smallest sites. “You don’t need a big area to make valuable habitat, you can use a boundary hedge,” he says. “Make it nice and tight to stop magpies entering and you’ll get lots of little birds visiting. Once you get the habitat right, it’s amazing what comes to the fore.”"
