"The first records of Ampleforth College Golf Club date from 1972 when Frank Amies, the then licensee at the Fairfax Arms, negotiated an arrangement with Ampleforth College for local people to use the college course at Gilling Castle. The nine-hole course was first constructed in 1960 by the college with the advice of the golf professional at Strensall.
The course is situated in the listed historic park surrounding Gilling Castle surrounded by woodland and offering superb views over to the North Yorkshire National Park. The course has undergone a major redevelopment programme over the last ten years and now provides a fair challenge to golfers of all abilities. The green fees are £15 per day (£5 for juniors) and there is accommodation and excellent catering facilities available at the Fairfax Arms only 300 yards from the course. Membership is available, £220 for an adult, £55 for a junior, and there is no entrance fee."
