Description
|
"Beau Desert - "The Beautiful Wilderness" - is situated at Hazel Slade, near Hednesford on Cannock Chase in Staffordshire, on land that was once part of the Beaudesert Estate of Charles Henry Alexander Paget, 6th Marquess of Anglesey. In 1912 he commissioned William Herbert Fowler, the eminent course architect, to design and lay out the course which he completed in 1913.
In 1919, because of heavy taxation, the Marquess offered to lease the course to local residents who had been allowed to play it and, in 1920, The Beau Desert Golf Club was established with the Marquess acting as President until 1946. In 1921, the Club was registered as a limited company and the lease signed for 161.73 acres, which included the Clubhouse and 3 cottages, for a period of 21 years at an annual rent of £57 plus 10% of profits. In 1932 however, the Marquess reluctantly decided to sell the course and, although when auctioned a much higher price was bid, he offered later to accept a figure that the Club could afford, £2400 - a mark of his great generosity. After protracted negotiations, deeds were transferred on 7 August 1936.
During this early period of the Club's history, a frequent guest of the Marquess was the Prince of Wales. Eminent members have included Viscount Newport (later the 6th Earl of Bradford - President 1946-55), the Earl of Dartmouth (1938-42), the Earl of Lichfield (1942-55) and Lord Vernon (1938-49).
Always highly regarded, the course hosted the Midland and Staffordshire professional and amateur championships as early as 1935. The greatest honour bestowed upon it has been its selection to host a regional qualifying round of the Open Championship on 17 occasions up to 2002. More recently Beau Desert hosted the Carris Trophy in 2002."
