Description
"Didsbury Golf Club was founded as a nine-hole course on land near the local railway station in 1891. The front room of the stationmaster's house became its first clubhouse until 1901 when it moved to its present 18 hole site alongside the River Mersey.
Over the years the course has changed significantly.  In 1921, the world renowned golf architect C.A. Mackenzie, famous for his terraced greens, was employed to redesign several holes. In 1973 the whole course was redesigned after the Manchester ring road, the M60 bisected the land.
Former Ryder Cup golfers, Peter Allis, now the voice of golf on television, and his partner Dave Thomas were the architects who produced the new course, which, with a few modifications, is that played today.
The River Mersey borders the course on three sides and has played a major part in the club's history, once or twice having threatened the club's existence with broken banks flooding the course and clubhouse in places up to seven feet deep.
Major bank strengthening work by the River Board has certainly improved the flooding problems but we still suffer to a lesser extent, like all our younger neighbouring golf clubs sited downstream on each side of the river.
The club and professional Peter Barber, a former European Tour player, have for many years encouraged the young members, with some success. Several have gone on to higher honours in the amateur game, while others joined the professional ranks and now have their own clubs.
Former junior member Daniel Wardrop (now a professional), a regular member of the England Boys team, once won the Cheshire Boys' championship by nine shots. Another former junior captain Andrew Murray turned professional and won the Panasonic European Championship, and like Peter Barber, is now commentating on golf on television and radio, at major events.
Over the years the club has tasted the sweet and the sour. The sweet when we celebrated our Centenary in 1991 under the captaincy of George Thomson. And the sour, when in 1907 our first clubhouse on the present site was burned down and major floods over the years seriously tested the loyalty of our members.
They have always responded with resolution and good humour. Like the incident reported in the early days of the club's history. Two members drove off the first tee. One shot hit a horse in the backside, whereupon it clamped its tail down in shock and bolted onto the first green and deposited the ball six inches from the hole.
Its owner got his two. But did it count? The members pontificated. and so did the committee. None could agree. So it was referred to the august Royal and Ancient.
Their verdict? The score stood. It was a two.
All part of our history..."
