Description
|
"Located just outside Wallasey in the heart of Merseyside and the Cheshire countryside is Bidston Golf Club, home to one of the most challenging and intriguing courses in the region. It is certainly far from easy as it possesses some of the most formidable tests in the area, but without being too fearsome to scare off those who are new to the game or whose handicap is quite low. The undulating fairways make accuracy from the tee all the more a demanding challenge, whilst your iron knowledge will be tested on the long par 4s. Watch out for the westerly wing which blows across some of the holes, as it can carry any straight drive towards danger.
Bidston Golf Club, founded in 1913, was an amalgamation of Golfing Societies who had previously been playing on the Wallasey Corporation Municipal Course; The Warren. A lease was secured and a nine-hole course created on the site of the present eighth to eighteenth holes. Further ground was leased in 1925 between the railway and the River Fender to provide an eighteen-hole golf course. A small friendly club, we take pride in our course and receive many commendations from visitors on it's condition. The course is a par 70 SSS, which offers a fair challenge to the experienced but will not overwhelm the beginner. In the late seventies some twenty acres of land were lost to the M53 motorway necessitating the creation of new holes on the ground that remained. The new holes being the present 2nd, 9th, 17th and 18th, which inevitably took away some of the character of the course, particularly the splendid 535 finish. During the seventies and eighties the club resisted suggestions from the owners of the land that it should move and the ground be developed for other purposes. Finally, under the Wirral Unitary Development plan, the M53 corridor, which includes Bidston Golf Club, was declared permanent Green Belt land. The Club was then able in the late nineties to purchase the freehold of the Course, thereby guaranteeing the future of the Club. For many years access to the course was from Bidston Railway Station until the building of the Leasowe Housing Estate allowed access from Scoresby Road to the Clubhouse. Some forty years later as a result of negotiations with British Rail, the Club forfeited its right of way across the railway line and in return an entrance to the Club from the Bidston Link Road was provided making the Golf Course more easily accessible to its members. Bidston welcomes Golf Societies, details on request from the Professional Mark Eagles or fill in an application form and post it to the Club. Members enjoy the varied social activities with a monthly social, which is different every month, from cabaret to casino; murder mysteries to themed dine-ins, as well as a variety of unofficial social events and competitions. Bad weather never discourages our golfers and when they have enjoyed their round of golf, they adjourn to the clubhouse for refreshments, followed by a game of snooker or bowls, or just to enjoy the company of like-minded fanatics. By the beginning of April 2003, refurbishing and redevelopment of the changing accommodation is planned to further enhance the status of the Club We currently have a limited number of vacancies for members. To join you do not necessarily need to be sponsored, we will accept members on interview."
