"Whitburn Golf Club is a friendly North East golf club were visitors and societies are always welcome.
Even without the prevailling westerly winds which often blow here, the 200 year old limestone walls, cleverly placed bunkers and the small, well-guarded greens make it a challenging but enjoyable test of golf for golfers of all standards. The greens are also considered to be among the best in the county.
Although the course is offically described as parkland, the final five holes run along the coastline and are, to all but the true purist, links holes. The course also has five par 3's, all of which are generally played with a cross wind. The course was originally laid out in 1934 by J Morrison, who is also known to have designed top courses such as Wentworth and the Princes course at Sandwich.
Whitburn Golf Club is located on the coast between Whitburn and South Shields. The course and clubhouse has magnificent panoramic views of the North East coastline. Tynemouth Priory and St Mary's island are all in view and on a good day, the Cheviot Hills to the north and the Cleveland Hills to the south can also be seen.
The course has excellent natural drainage from the underlying limestone rock. This makes Whitburn an ideal choice for those golfers wishing to play to "Winter Golf" as the course remains playable when most other courses in the area are closed. Winter golf is made more enjoyable as Whitburn has installed top quality "Huxley" tee mats and has never had a trolley ban. Whitburn has a "no closure" policy and buggy hire is also available."
